VLANs¶
A VLAN puts a separate network on an existing port using 802.1Q tags.
Where: Connectivity > Interfaces & network > Interfaces & network tab > + Add Interface > VLAN.
Creating a VLAN¶
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Name | e.g. vlan100 |
| VLAN Tag | The 802.1Q tag, 1–4094 |
| Parent interface | The port to tag on |
| Addresses | The address this VLAN carries |
| Description | Optional label |
Click Create VLAN, then apply and confirm.
The parent keeps its own address and untagged network. That makes a VLAN the safe way to add a network to a port already in use; the Local networks tab offers Add a VLAN for exactly this case.
The far side must agree¶
The switch port or device on the parent must send and expect the same tag. A VLAN that is up and passes nothing is almost always the far side.
